God Love a Husband Who Helps Take Care of the Kids and the House

men who take care of the kids

During a recent staff meeting

I am very lucky to have a husband who takes on an equal share of house, home and children. I think I would go completely ape poop crazy if he did not and am very appreciative of his parents for raising him the way they did. For a couple of weeks now, I have frequently worked 9 and 10 hour days, leaving him to drop the kids off at childcare as well as pick them up. I haven’t made dinner more than two or three times in the last month, our family subsisting on thrown together sandwiches, canned soup or scrambled eggs.

We’ve had quite a bit of change in the last year- a new baby whom we were told would have serious health issues (but thankfully has not), moved to a small town in rural Kansas after living in Kansas City for ten years. We sold our house and moved into a tiny two bedroom farm house overlooking the Flint Hills. The sunsets are gorgeous, we love it here and know we made the right long term move for our family. About a month and a half ago, though, I started getting a little stir crazy. I needed some me- time and some adventure. With Southwest reward points in hand and DH’s (blog speak for “Dear Husband”) blessing, I booked a flight to see one of my favorite friends.

I was stir crazy because I hadn’t had much time on my own in a long time and like any good introvert, I need my alone time. Being the mom of two small children (ages 4 and 9 mo), any alone time is hard to come by let alone when you have as many life changes as we have had this past year. Have you seen the picture that’s been going around on Facebook of a small child’s hand reaching under the bathroom door, with wiggling fingers? “Mom? Mommy? Mommy? What are you doing?” That. I love love love my babies and my life in our new little life out in the country, but sometimes mama needs a break.

DH graciously accepted the task of caring for two children on his own, even though neither one of us has gotten a full night’s sleep in months nor that our 9 mo still wakes up in the night. The last few days, she has even woken up every two hours. He definitely will have a challenge on his hands, but this morning he bid me adieu with a smile on his face. God bless his soul. He will probably hate me by Monday.
